   Plantation History

U.S. Highway 441, as it's called today, was in those days just two-lane highway that connected Palm Beach and Dade County, an area that was fairly  isolated and far from any real estate development which existed to the east. The area practically undeveloped was a natural habitat for large alligators, snakes and other wild animals inhabited the land.

A prominent sight long the road in the oak forests were "chickees", open-air huts that have been used for ages by Florida's Seminoles. Seminoles were originally bands of Creek Indians from Georgia and Alabama who migrated to Florida in the 1700s. The area was dubbed the Old Plantation Water Control District when an irrigation and drainage district in was constructed in 1911. There were also signs along the highway which advertised land for sale at prices of "$10 down, $100 a month".

Frederick C. Peters founded Plantation in 1931 after moving his family from Missouri into the area then known as South Dade County which is now Miami-Dade County. The family introduced Florida Red Potatoes, which were popularized by the promotional slogan, "Peter's Patent Potatoes Peel Pretty".

Broward County remained relatively uninhabited until the 1940s radical changes due to World War II coursed an increase in the local economy. South Florida's attractive tropical climate and lifestyle and ideal location within Broward County drew an influx of People seeking undeveloped, inexpensive land and the area's canal system was an added bonus.

Frederick Peters soon began raising cattle known as Polled Herefords which prompted the him to look for additional grazing land the for his cattle. Peters began looking for inexpensive, undeveloped real estate property and discovered the Plantation area which already had a subterranean irrigation system consisting of layered muck sand and rock. The conditions of the area's real estate turned out to be perfect for plowing and cultivating crops and grasses, so in 1941, Peters took advantage of the cheap land and bought 10,000 acres of undeveloped real estate for $250,000. The land had been partially drained during construction of the Holloway Canals, but had no irrigation facilities. The area was nicknamed Plantation because the larger tracts of real estate property were purchased by real estate investors from city areas, who refered to their real estate properties as "plantations".
